CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Mayor Joe Pitts is alerting Clarksville business owners to a potential delay in processing business license renewals.
Computer problems at the Tennessee Department of Revenue caused a data log jam and clerks in the Clarksville Department of Finance were not able to access the information they needed to process local renewals. After multiple complaints from cities across Tennessee, the State was able to identify and remedy the problem, but then the City of Clarksville got flooded with 900 hundred license renewal requests last week.
“The City didn’t cause this problem, but I want business owners to know we’re doing all we can to work through the backlog of renewals as quickly as possible,” Mayor Pitts said. “We’ve assigned extra manpower to processing business license renewals.”
The rub, of course, is this is tax season. Most business tax returns and payments are due to the Tennessee Department of Revenue no later than April 15, and the local and state business license expiration date is 30 days after the tax due date.
The City has to verify with the State that a business has filed a tax return and paid its taxes before it can issue a business license. Because of the State’s computer glitch, clerks were not able to determine from the computerized Business Tax Portal who had filed and paid taxes. With that issue resolved, local clerks are racing to process pending business license requests.
“Some businesses have called to check on their license renewal, so we want them to understand the situation,” Mayor Pitts said. “Some renewals will be a little later than usual, but we’re working hard to meet the deadlines and avoid creating any hardships for our businesses.”
