Tennessee’s Top Spot – proud to hold bottom spot on crimes list
Clarksville may be the fifth fastest growing city in Tennessee (and the ninth fastest growing in the U.S.), but there is one list that local officials are proud to be trailing – and that’s the FBI’s list of Tennessee’s largest cities with the lowest crime rates.
Clarksville reported 13,698 total offenses, compiled in the FBI’s Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report for 2007 (the most recent year for which data has been compiled). This compared to 25,117 total offenses reported by Chattanooga – the next lowest reported among the state’s largest cities. Knoxville reported 28,101 crimes, Nashville 83,758 and Memphis 129,211. Using 2000 population numbers, these totals amount to 121 crimes per 1,000 people in Clarksville, 162 in Chattanooga, 154 in Knoxville, 152 in Nashville and 192 in Memphis.
The FBI compiles crime statistics for 10 separate categories for U.S. cities with populations greater than 100,000. The categories include violent crime, murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, property crime, burglary, larceny/theft, motor vehicle theft and arson. Clarksville compared favorably to the top Tennessee cities across the list, but when the city is compared to other U.S. cities of similar size, the numbers look even better.
“I couldn’t be more pleased that Clarksville is growing economically and by population in pace with other major Tennessee cities, and ahead of the pack with most U.S. cities. That we have been able to do that while preserving a safe quality of life for residents and visitors can be attributed to our fine citizens, and our excellent law enforcement,” said Mayor John Piper.
