Police seek input on body-worn cameras
With 147 BWCs fielded so far, second grant on horizon

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Clarksville Police are inviting citizens to take part in a new community survey about the department’s implementation of police officer body-worn cameras.

The survey can be completed online at from March 1-31. Citizens also may pick up and return a paper copy of the survey at these locations:
 
* Clarksville Police Headquarters, 135 Commerce St.
* North Precinct office, 211 Cunningham Lane.
* South Precinct office, 1584 Vista Lane Suite C.
* City Hall security desk, One Public Square.
* Gas & Water South Service Center, 2215 Madison St.
* Gas & Water North Service Center, 2015 Fort Campbell Blvd.

The department began phased implementation of body-worn cameras (BWCs) in September 2018 after obtaining a $337,500 U.S. Department of Justice grant, with an equal match approved by the Clarksville City Council. So far, 147 of the 226 body-worn cameras funded by the first grant have been fielded. The remaining 79 BWCs from the initial grant are expected to be operational by April 1.

The Clarksville Police Department has been approved for a second federal BWC grant for $114,130, which requires approval of another $114,130 in matching funds by the City Council. The second grant would outfit 76 more officers, bringing the department total to 302 BWCs.

The community survey is part of the Department of Justice grant process and the Clarksville Police Department’s efforts to maintain an open public dialogue and seek feedback on the BWC program. Additionally, CPD will conduct a town hall meeting about the BWC program in coming weeks to provide the public an opportunity to offer feedback and opinions, and express any concerns. The meeting date will be announced as soon as plans are finalized.
