City offers cold weather assistance
Fire Stations, Recreation Centers serve as warming centers
Posted Date: 1/2/2018
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Clarksville Fire Stations and City Recreation Centers are serving as temporary warming centers for people who need emergency relief from the severe cold that is expected to grip Middle Tennessee for the next several days.

Clarksville Police Department officers also are on the lookout for people who may need assistance and shelter during the cold spell. Officers are prepared to offer emergency assistance, advise people about the nearest warming centers and shelters, and arrange transportation as needed.

Clarksville’s Office of Community and Economic Development works with the area’s social service agencies to help coordinate homeless services. The office reports that the Community Action Agency, 931-802-6338, provides daytime warmth and services at Old Firehouse Day Shelter, 931-542-0381, and overnight shelter through the Room In the Inn program, which is run by local churches. The agency also offers utility-bill assistance for qualifying households.

The Salvation Army, 931-553-8494, which has a shelter and various homeless services, is operating under its White Flag procedures, in which it waives restrictions on how long someone is able to stay in its shelter during cold weather.

Volunteers also have set up a day-and-night warming center at New Providence United Methodist Church, 1317 Fort Campbell Blvd., Clarksville. It is expected to remain open for most of the week. For information, call 931-338-3462.
