Filing Complaints

The Clarksville Human Relations Commission (CHRC) looks at and decides on complaints made by people who feel their rights have been violated by discrimination. You can file a complaint if you feel your rights habe been taken because of your :

  • race
  • religion
  • color
  • national origin sex
  • age (if you are 40 or older)
  • blindness
  • disability
  • ancestry

If you feel that some one, institution or company, has violated your rights, you can file a complaint with the Clarksville Human Relations Commission as soon as possible. CHRC has the responsibility to conduct impartial investigations and hearing upon the allegations of persons who believe their rights have been violated by discriminatory practices.

If you feel you have been treated unequally, this is what you
can do:

  • Get in touch with the CHRC. You can write a letter, call or stop by the City Hall to file a complaint. Complaint forms are also available on this website. You can fill one out and submit it online, or print it out and bring it to City Hall.
  • File your complaint as soon as you can. You have 180 days from the date of the incident to make a complaint about employment or public accommodations. You have one year from the date of the incident to make a housing complaint.
  • After you have filed your complaint, CHRC will investigate the problem. CHRC will decide if further action needs to be taken. If there is "probable cause", your case will continue. If there is "no probable cause", you have a right to appeal the decision.
  • If "probable cause" is found, CHRC will try to reach an agreement between you and those you feel have discriminated against you.
  • If an agreement can’t be reached, a hearing will be held, a legally binding order will be made and penalties will be decided. These decisions can be appealed.
