The City of Clarksville owns and operates Riverview Cemetery, the oldest public cemetery in Clarksville-Montgomery County. Outside the main gate of the grounds is a state marker bearing this inscription: "Men of all American wars are interred here on land once owned by Valentine Sevier (1747-1800), who was the first person buried here. Many pioneer and 19th century citizens, including Revolutionary War soldier Robert Nelson, are buried here. One plot contains the reinterred remains of 125 Confederate soldiers. Also buried here is artist Robert L. Newman." Valentine Sevier was one of the early settlers of Clarksville. He was the brother of John Sevier, the first Governor of the state after Tennessee attained statehood in 1796. The cemetery was laid out on a hillside when Clarksville was no more than a village surrounded by hostile Indians. The hill was chosen because there was less likelihood of an Indian ambush during a burial. To have proceeded up or down the nearby Cumberland River to a more level tract would have risked massacre.
